How the RV power-station calculation works
A watt is a rate of power use. A watt-hour is energy used over time. The basic device calculation is:
Daily watt-hours = running watts × operating hours × quantity
Add every device, multiply by the number of days between dependable recharges, and then allow for conversion losses and reserve. The calculator uses:
Minimum rated capacity = daily watt-hours × days ÷ efficiency ÷ usable share
The default 85% efficiency and 20% reserve are transparent planning assumptions, not universal product specifications. DC loads may avoid some inverter loss; temperature, battery age, small standby loads, wiring, power electronics, and device cycling can change real results.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s energy education materials explain the same foundation: energy in watt-hours comes from wattage multiplied by operating time. Use that arithmetic as the starting point, then verify the real equipment.
Worked example: a simple remote-work campsite day

At 85% efficiency with a 20% reserve, that sample needs roughly 1,206Wh of rated capacity for one day. A 1,024Wh station may still be useful if the real refrigerator draw is lower, devices charge through efficient DC ports, or dependable recharging happens during the day—but the estimate shows why a nameplate near 1kWh is not the same as 1kWh delivered to every load.
Capacity is only one of five buying checks
- Daily energy: the watt-hours your actual routine consumes.
- Continuous output: the running watts of devices that may operate together.
- Startup surge: the brief higher demand from compressors, pumps, motors, and some appliances.
- Recharging: realistic wall, solar, alternator, or vehicle input between camps.
- Fit: weight, dimensions, port layout, temperature limits, warranty, and whether the battery can expand.

How do I calculate the watt-hours my RV devices use?
Multiply each device’s running watts by the hours it operates, then multiply by quantity. Add the watt-hours for every device to estimate daily energy use.
Why is the recommended battery larger than the watt-hour total?
The calculator includes your reserve and conversion-efficiency assumptions because rated battery capacity is not the same as energy delivered to every outlet under real conditions.
Does watt-hour capacity tell me whether a power station can run an appliance?
No. Capacity estimates duration. You must also confirm that continuous output and surge rating meet the appliance’s running and startup demand.
Can this calculator size power for an RV air conditioner?
It can illustrate the large energy requirement, but air conditioners have high running and startup demands. Confirm measured consumption, surge requirements, temperature conditions, and manufacturer limits before choosing equipment.
Can I use this estimate for medical or life-sustaining equipment?
No. Follow the equipment manufacturer and healthcare provider’s backup-power guidance, and build redundancy appropriate to the consequences of an outage.
